Students to deliver charity cash 'Bummit' style

Students from the University of Sheffield who raised a whopping £64,000 for charity by completing a 1,700 miles hitch-hike to Estonia, are at it again, this time to deliver the money to their chosen charities.

The students, who are part of Sheffield Rag, wanted to celebrate their grand total and the sixth and most successful 'Bummit' so far. Previous challenges have seen students safely and successfully hitch-hike to Budapest, Bucharest, Riga and Belgrade. Now, the students feel that the best way to get the money raised to their chosen charities is to deliver the cheques by hand, covering over 450 miles.

Armed with giant celebrity cheques, the students will set off on Saturday 30 August 2008 at 7am from the University of Sheffield Union of Students. They are aiming to deliver cheques to each of their five charities' offices in the UK in under 24 hours. The charities include: SOS Children in Cambridge; STOP (Trafficking UK) and Sue Ryder Care in London, People and Planet in Oxford and finally SheffieldVolunteering in Sheffield.

Two teams of 3 students will make the trip to each of the charities, one team will hitch-hike 'Bummit' style and the other team will take the train. They hope to have delivered all cheques and be back in Sheffield by 10pm.

The teams of students were among 300 students who took part in the unique 'Bummit to Tallinn' challenge over Easter, which raised the charity cash. As part of the challenge the students had to get from Sheffield to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, within eight days. With only 15 to spend they had to blag their way onto public transport, trains and flights, as well as hitch-hike to see them to their final destination.

Nick Stanton, Chair of the Bummit committee, who is studying Politics at the University of Sheffield, said: "Unlike previous Bummits this race up and down the country will not be sponsored. The Bummit committee aims simply to raise awareness and promote future feats of goodwill.

"Members of the public should be on the look out for us on Saturday 30 August as we will need all the help we can get. After all it's not every day you'll get the chance to aid saving the environment, freeing oppressed people, furthering cancer research or rescuing orphans!"
