A THAW is on the way to the Sheffield region - but not before more ice and snow.

Forecasters say winter’s grip will be released as the weekend progresses, with rain moving in and temperatures going up from Saturday night. But snow is expected later tomorrow (Friday).

Sheffield highway contractors Amey appealed this week for the co-operation of motorists who park on side streets as workers continued snow clearing operations around the clock.

Operational director Chris Morris said: “Our teams are working flat out to clear snow from Sheffield’s streets and lay grit on the ploughed area to prevent the remaining snow from compacting into ice. Our gritters are large vehicles and the speed of our operations is highly affected by whether we are able to get down the streets without obstructions. We therefore ask that people park sensibly to give us the room we need.”

Amey says it is not possible to give information about times when specific streets will be cleared.

Cabinet member Coun Jack Scott said: “The Streets Ahead team is continuing to work hard to keep Sheffield moving. Although the snow seems to be subsiding for the time being there is still a risk of ice so we urge people to take care if they are out and about.

“As well as the work to clear snow from the side streets, the teams have been clearing snow and gritting pavements on major city centre routes, around hospitals and key shopping centres.”
