There’s snow way through in Sheffield
Snow Warden. Mukhtar Tufail
HELPING elderly residents is the top priority for a Sheffield husband-and-wife snow warden team.
Mukhtar Tufail and his wife Iffat Yasmin spent yesterday evening spreading grit on pavements around the Main Road area of Darnall, where they live.
Mr Tufail, a legal adviser for Sheffield and Rotherham District Council of Muslims, said: “We have been spreading grit along the pavements and we also take it upon ourselves to see if all the elderly residents okay and whether they need us to grit their paths, too, so they can get out.
“It is a rewarding job and feels like you are helping your community.”
Sheffield Council runs the snow warden scheme across the city – volunteers are provide with bags of grit, shovels and clothing to go out on duty keeping pavements safe.
Mr Tufail and his wife have been wardens for two years.
He said: “I believe we are the only British Pakistani couple in Sheffield who have volunteered and we are proud to do it.”
