Use your vote today to shape Sheffield's future

Sheffield residents are being reminded to vote in the local council elections and the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner elections today.

In addition, people in the Brightside and Hillsborough constituency will have the chance to vote for their new Member of Parliament in a by-election today.

John Mothersole, returning officer for the local elections in Sheffield, said: “All polling stations are open from 7am in the morning until 10pm, so you have all day to go and vote.”

Coun Julie Dore, leader of the Labour council, added: “We hope that there will be a good turnout and Sheffield people will vote today to elect councillors that will work hard for their local community and stand up for Sheffield to continue to take our city forward.”

Coun Colin Ross, leader of the Liberal Democrats in Sheffield, said: “Today Sheffielders have a great opportunity make a positive statement about what they want for the city. Everyone should make sure they take the time today to make sure their voice is heard.”

People with a postal vote have up until 10pm tonight to hand it in at any polling station.

Mr Mothersole said: “If you do have a postal vote, then please take responsibility for it. You need to complete it personally and follow all the instructions.”

Results of the by-election are expected in the early hours while the full local elections result is expected at 5pm tomorrow.

In the last two weeks before registration closed, nearly 11,000 people successfully applied to vote.

They will join around 378,000 others who are able to vote today.
