The hole has opened up in Pond Street near Sheffield Interchange and vapour has been spotted steaming from the crack in the road surface.

The road remains open, with traffic currently being diverted around the site of the hole by Sheffield Hallam security guards.

Hallam security guard, Dave Womack, said: “We think it’s been caused by a burst heating pipe.

“They’re going to bring in traffic lights soon, but we have no idea when it will be fixed.”

He continued by saying Veolia were believed to be on their way to begin work to repair the hole.

Eye witness, Jane Day, said she was ‘shocked’ to see a hole open up in one of the city’s busiest bus routes.

“It’s not what you expect to see. I am shocked that it’s opened up there. I’ve never seen a sinkhole before,” said Jane, of Eastern Avenue, Arbourthorne.

The 57-year-old added: “The security guards are doing a good job, but it’s just as well they’re there as it could cause a serious accident.

“I think it should have been fixed already, it should be a priority.”
