Sheffield students say overnight roadworks in their street have kept them up all night on the eve of important exams.

Sheffield Council has been carrying out resurfacing work in Crookesmoor for the past couple of weeks.

Most of the work has been done during the day, but last week the council’s Streets Ahead team were digging up the junction of Crookesmoor Road and Barber Road between 7pm and 7am.

For 19-year-old Sarah Woolley and her housemates, who live next to the junction, the work has come at exactly the wrong time. And Sarah says she was not made aware of the night works in good time.

“This is all during the exam period, so students need to know in advance,” she said. “We are all having to plan to stay in other places last minute.”

Sarah has had at least two exams the day after the night work was carried out, and it has been the same for many of her friends.

She said: “It’s an unbelievable amount of disruption. The number of students it’s affected is extraordinary.”

A Streets Ahead spokesperson apologised for the disruption, adding: “The majority of Crookesmoor Road was resurfaced during the day because we recognised that this is predominately a residential and student area.

“However, we have been unable to resurface the junction of Barber Road and Crookesmoor Road during the day because this would have meant closing the pavements and roads, causing a lot of disruption to road users and pedestrians.

“Residents were informed in advance that the works would be taking place overnight and signs were placed on the road the week before works began.”

The work should have finished this weekend.
