A SON watched in horror as his dad was crushed to death as the pair worked together at a Sheffield factory.

Michael Dwyer, of Gleadless, Sheffield, was killed when a steel metal casting fell onto him as he worked at RS Bruce Metals and Machinery in Attercliffe.

His son Jordan saw the tragedy unfold on Monday afternoon.

His family were called to the scene as emergency services battled to save his dad.

A joint investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is now under way.

Jordan said on Facebook: “Lost the man of my life, it’s killing me dad.

“Been and put flowers down today - saw everything happen again.

“I tried all I could to save him. Glad I was by your side when you went.

“RIP dad – proper miss you already.”

Officers from South Yorkshire Police and the Health and Safety Executive are carrying out inquiries to establish exactly what happened.

Yesterday, heartbroken friends and relatives of 48-year-old Mr Dwyer – a father-of-three-and grandfather-of-two – gathered at the spot where he died to lay flowers.

Speaking at the scene, Mr Dwyer’s widow Marie, aged 46, said: “All I know is he was cutting up when something fell on him, crushing him to death.

“We were all here shortly after it happened because my son works here – he was working with his dad when it happened. He called us.

“I am devastated, that’s all I want to say.”

An RS Bruce employee accompanied Mr Dwyer’s family to the place where he was crushed.

He told them: “He was in charge of the whole thing, he knew what he was doing, it’s just an absolute tragedy.

“It’s devastating when accidents like this happen.”

Robert Bruce, a director of the March Street firm where Mr Dwyer was working on the day he died, said: “Michael was a well respected member of the team and we would like to offer our sincere condolences to his family.

“We are co-operating fully with all the investigating authorities.”

RS Bruce is one of only 10 firms worldwide which specialise in the recovery of precious metals from industry.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Police are investigating an incident, which occurred on Monday, at about 1.45pm, at an industrial premises on March Street, Sheffield.

“It is believed a 48-year-old man from Sheffield was fatally injured when he was crushed by a piece of metal.

“The Health and Safety Executive is aware and a joint investigation is under way alongside South Yorkshire Police.”
