Reduced speed limits on the M1 around Sheffield could be in place by next year - with a decision due by the end of 2014.
The Highways Agency is due to make an announcement later this year on whether the speed limit will be dropped to 60mph between junction 28 at Mansfield and junction 35a at Sheffield and Rotherham, following the results of a public consultation that took place earlier this year.
A spokesman for the Highways Agency said there is no confirmed date for an announcement at this stage.
The Highways Agency consultation document said: “Subject to the results of the consultation, we envisage that the maximum mandatory 60mph speed limit will be operational by 2015.”
The limit would run daily between 7am and 7pm.
