The Gordon Banks stamp

The Gordon Banks stamp

ONE of Sheffield’s most famous sporting sons - and England’s only World Cup-winning goalkeeper - has been immortalised on a commemorative stamp to celebrate a footballing milestone.

Gordon Banks, from Tinsley, is featured in a new set of first class postal stamps marking 150 years since the rules of Association Football were set.

During his career Banks played for Chesterfield and Stoke City - as well as lifting soccer’s most coveted trophy with England in 1966.

The stamps feature 11 British footballing heroes and are launched on May 9.
