What happens if there's a dispute as to the paternity of a child?
"If there's a dispute, if the alleged father denies that he is the father of the child, then the mother will make an application to the magistrates court under what's called a specific issue," said Martin Loxley, partner and head of family law at Irwin Mitchell in Sheffield on the Sheffield Telegraph podcast about disputes of paternity.
"She will invite the magistrates court to order that the father, or the alleged father, is the father of the child," Loxley continued.
"And before that order is made, obviously the man has the right to defend himself. There is likely to be a DNA test, which will prove one way or the other whether he is the father," explained Loxley.
