A NINE-YEAR-OLD Sheffield boy is aiming to swim about a mile and a half to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care in memory of his mother.
Luke Turner, who lost his mum, Joanne, to breast cancer just before her 40th birthday two years ago, will be joined at Chapeltown Swimming Baths by his best friend, Sam Bromley.
Luke’s father, Lee, aged 41, of Hesley Grove, Chapeltown, said: “He will swim and swim, he says he must finish.
“When I come home from work, and he’s training on the Wii fit because he wants to get muscles, it does bring a smile to your face. He wants to raise as much money as possible because it is important to his mum and because it may help someone else with cancer.”
The boys, who both go to Lound Junior School, will take part in a Marie Curie Cancer Care swimathon on April 28. Already they have raised around half their of £400 target.

Joanne was diagnosed with breast cancer when Luke was three. She continued to work and volunteer for schools through a mastectomy, courses of chemotherapy and radiotherapy but died in hospital.
Lee, an IT contracts manager, added: “When Luke hears the word cancer now, he’s like ‘We’ve got to get rid of this’.”
