Schoolboy Jacob Young is one of the children benefiting from projects aimed at keeping youngsters healthy.

The 12-year-old had a Body Mass Index of 28.5 when his mother Sarah, 41, requested a referral. A ‘normal’ BMI for an average boy his age is 18.5-24.9, calculated on weight and height. Now Jacob and takes part in Zest for Health, which involved whole families rather than just the child.

Families attend a weekly one-hour group session on healthy eating while children take part in an hour of organised physical activity.

In Zest for Health, a free weight management service for young people, Jacob lost 2.5kg in 12 weeks.

Sarah, of Westfield, Sheffield, said: “I asked for help because he struggles with his eating and it went from there. He’s had a brilliant time. I wanted to get him more into sport and activities and thinking about being healthy and he does.

“Jacob is a big lad anyway. I didn’t feed him junk but he has learning difficulties and finds it difficult to understand about food and things sometimes.

“His confidence has come on leaps and bounds. Now instead of sitting around and playing computer games he is out and about playing sport, or he uses his Wii Fit instead.”
