THE Sharrow Marrow has been putting people in the picture about seasonal fruit and veg for nearly two years now – and in 2012 it plans to keep the message going all year round.
The independent greengrocer’s shop has produced an A4 calendar (pictured), designed by Ali Graney and featuring a year’s worth of blackboard chalk drawings by artist and printmaker Moya Sketchley.
The pictures playfully reflect seasonality and include information supplied by shopkeeper Nikki Muir, based on when different varieties of fruit and veg are available to buy.
Nikki says: “We are all about feeding the Hunters Bar community fresh, seasonal and affordable veg while having fun and being creative.
“The calender reflects this ethos and highlights the incredible and epic chalk boards that Moya Sketchley has drawn in the shop over the year – alongside tips about what to buy that is in season each month.”
For example, available in January are blood oranges, forced Yorkshire rhubarb and Channel Islands daffodils – but it’s a last chance to buy pomegranates and clementines.
Next month shoppers can look forward to bunched watercress but don’t miss out on the purple sprouting broccoli and swede, says Nikki.
The calendar is now on sale at the Sharrow Marrow in Sharrowvale Road and other local shops, priced £7.50.
Nikki adds: “We are pretty chuffed about how it has turned out and would love to shout about it and our lovely little community.”
lThe shop is closed until Monday but will reopen next week with fresh local seasonal fruit and veg – and a new set of winter drawings.
