AN INQUEST has been opened on a 70-year-old man who was crushed as a car he was working on outside his Sheffield home fell on him, trapping him underneath.
David Wilks was repairing the car on his driveway in Greenwood Road, Darnall, when the tragedy happened on Saturday at 7.15pm.
Firefighters lifted the vehicle off Mr Wilks but he was pronounced dead a short time later. Neighbours had tried to help him before emergency services arrived.
A fire service spokesman said: “We responded to a call that a man had been working under his car and had become trapped after it fell onto him.
“Our technical rescue unit released him but unfortunately it was later reported that the incident proved fatal.”
A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman confirmed: “Police were alerted by the ambulance service to an incident on Greenwood Road, Sheffield.
“It was reported that a man was believed to have died after a vehicle had collapsed on top of him, on his driveway, while he was carrying out repairs.”
The inquest was adjourned.
