OLYMPIC torchbearer John Burkhill brightened up a classroom when he showed youngsters the flame he carried.

The colourful charity campaigner, known as the ‘mad man with the pram’, visited Wharncliffe Side Primary School in Sheffield.

And John, who has raised thousands for Macmillan, shared his experience of carrying the torch through Chapeltown when the Olympic relay visited his home city.

Barry Couldwell, who volunteers at the school, said the pupils really enjoyed the 73-year-old’s visit.

He said: “The children were thrilled to see John and he brought along the torch which he proudly carried for a few metres in Chapeltown.

“They held a question and answer call and John was only too pleased to oblige if he could.

“Thank you John from myself and all the staff and pupils.”
