AN INVESTIGATION was underway this week after a building collapsed in Broad Lane, near Brook House roundabout, forcing student residents to flee.

One man was trapped in the rubble but managed to free himself before fire crews arrived at the premises above the former Butler’s Balti House. Thirty people were checked at the scene by paramedics.

Dylan Wang, 29, who runs a shop below the flats, said: “It is a miracle no one was killed or seriously hurt.”

The University of Sheffield was helping 15 students to find alternative accommodation. Fire crews were confronted with “a huge hole” in the middle of the terrace after the first and second floors collapsed onto the ground floor on Saturday afternoon. Builders had been working in the property.

Broad Lane was closed.
