Moody rewarded for decade of Royal service

The Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, David Moody, becomes a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, awarded by the Queen to people who have served the monarch in a personal way.

Lord Lieutenants are responsible for organising royal visits to their county, and Mr Moody, aged 74, has held the post locally since 2004.

Prof Alan Walker, one of the country’s leading experts on ageing, was awarded the CBE for his services to social science over a career in the city which stretches back almost 40 years.

He said: “I am absolutely delighted by this honour. It recognises a long and sustained contribution to social research in several fields including ageing. I am really pleased too that it acknowledges the leading position of the university’s Department of Sociological Studies in social science research.”

Prof Walker is leading a project into the processes of ageing which will provide research guidelines across 14 European countries over the next decade, bringing together 24 partners and over 700 contributor and organisations.

Lynne Smith, clinical manager at the gastro-intestinal investigation unit at the Northern General Hospital, receives the MBE.

She has worked for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals since 1974, building the unit into one of the foremost in Britain. “I am lucky to work with the best team you could wish for,” she said. “Everyone puts in so much effort. I am so proud to have been put forward.”

Maureen Neill, a magistrate and director of Meadowhead Community Learning Trust, who lives in Fulwood, receives MBE for services to the community.

The award also goes to Christopher Pennell, of Dore, Sheffield, who spent 27 years in the coal industry before switching to environment and heritage, and was the National Trust’s regional director in the East Midlands.

Paul Newman, who has worked for South Yorkshire Police for 31 years, receives the MBE for services to policing and the community.

The 54-year-old is attached to Kimberworth Safer Neighbourhood Team in Rotherham and lives in Wincobank.
