A huge swathe of heartfelt messages have been attached to railings at the place where 23-year-old Assel Al-Essaie was shot in the chest as he attended a family gathering to celebrate his twin sister's engagement at a home in Daniel Hill, Upperthorpe.

Many cards and messages expressed complete shock at the young man's death.

Kymani said: "RIP Assel, can't believe your gone" and Shania added: "Gone but never forgotten."

Another card read: "Can't believe we will never see you again" and a friend wrote on a card: "I hope your living life to fullest in paradise."

Mr Al-Essaie was rushed to hospital after the attack on Saturday afternoon but could not be saved. A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder and has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Police were continuing to make door-to-door enquiries today.

An officer at the scene said: "We are speaking to neighbours and trying to provide a reassuring presence in the community."

A relative at the family home declined to be interviewed.

Just five days before the incident, Cameron Spalding, aged 25, was shot in the chest in Butterthwaite Road, Shiregreen.

He suffered life threatening injuries but is now in a stable condition in hospital.
