PENISTONE and Stocksbridge MP Angela Smith is rallying opposition to the Government’s controversial plans to sell forests.
She is urging local people to contact her so their views are heard as part of the public consultation process, describing the proposed sale as “an act of vandalism”.
She said: “I will be opposing it at every opportunity. The true value of our forests can never be reflected in the price the Tory-led government gets from selling them.
“This is not the first time the Tories have tried to sell off our forests. In the 1980s they sold off thousands of hectares of land.”
Amid an outcry, the Government has said it is at a “very early stage” of a “genuinely open” consultation, prompting speculation that it is preparing for a climb-down over selling the English Forestry Commission estate.
