SHEFFIELD Central Labour MP Paul Blomfield has written to BBC Director General Mark Thompson in opposition to proposed cuts to BBC local radio, in particular to BBC Radio Sheffield.
Mr Blomfield said he feared “a spiral of decline for BBC local radio. More programmes are going to be shared regionally with BBC Radio Leeds and York, and they won’t be able to provide the same degree of local Sheffield news and views.
“What is happening locally matters to people and the BBC executives need to recognise that a decline in the amount of Sheffield-specific content will lead to a decline in the local Sheffield audience. This will then further threaten the viability of BBC local radio.”
