MP welcomes radio rethink

SHEFFIELD Central MP Paul Blomfield this week welcomed the announcement by the BBC Trust to reverse around half of a proposed £15m cut in the budgets of local radio stations, regional news and 5 live.

He said the trust was right to scale back a threatened increase in shared regional programming and job cuts in newsrooms and to give local stations the freedom to continue specialist services.

“Of course cuts are still going to have to be made but in particular I hope that this will mean BBC Radio Sheffield can continue to provide away football match commentary for our teams and ensure that language programmes for ethnic minority communities can continue to be broadcast.”
