A NEIGHBOUR has been hailed a hero after rescuing his severely-disabled man from his burning flat.

Michael Hamilton, who was ill in bed with flu, dragged James Burton, aged 40, from his ground-floor flat in Clover Gardens, Wincobank, after spotting smoke last Saturday night.

Michael, aged 28, a welfare benefits advisor, said James had managed to crawl to the door. “I picked him up and carried him away, by which time the fire brigade had arrived. I was just doing what anyone would have done really.”

But James said: “He was a hero.”

Fire crews gave James oxygen until he was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation. A chip pan caused the fire.
