A sculpture marking Sheffield’s industrial heritage is being relocated from the city centre to Kelham Island Museum after a successful campaign to save it from being demolished.
The artwork, Heavy Plant, built in 1988 by artist David Kemp using materials from scrapyards and derelict factories, was due to fall victim of the redevelopment of the area around the Sheffield Technology Park off Howard Lane, near Arundel Gate.
It will have a new home at Kelham Island after public pressure and Tesco, which is due to open a supermarket as part of the Pearl Works complex, donated £5,000 for the relocation.
Campaigner Sara Hill said: “The move went very well. It’s really good to know that the community – the people it was built for – care about it.”
The complex, near Sheffield Hallam University, will also include student flats.
