THE switch of a few hundred yards has proved sweet for Alison Foster, who makes cheesecakes at her home in Nether Edge.
“It was so bad in Barkers Pool,” she said. “We weren’t getting the traffic and the cost of the stall meant I wasn’t making any money, so I stopped going and so did a lot of people.
“When they made the move here, I thought we have got to try to support our local market, and now it seems to be a lot better. It’s really encouraging to see so many people coming out.”
Setting up the Heavenly Cheesecake Company 18 months ago was a dramatic shift in direction for Alison after her work as a social housing manager in Sheffield. She is occasionally helped by husband Colin, such as at the Nether Edge farmers’ market last Sunday.
Alison’s range of cheesecakes are on sale at farmers’ markets in Hathersage (the next is on Saturday from 10am to 2pm), Castleton (Sun-day, 10am to 3pm) and the Spring Food Fair in Baslow Village Hall (Saturday and Sunday, 9.30am to 4.30pm).
“We are trying to stay local. We want to support the Sheffield market because we are a city with so many good local food producers, and it should be able to support a good local market.”
Alison is due to feature on Channel 4’s The Secret Supper on Saturday, presented by Olly Smith.
