SLEEPING Beauty is to be given a new twist in Sheffield when the fairytale is told through Oriental belly dance.
Sheffield-based dance group Belrobics is appealing for women to join the production for the Montgomery Theatre in Surrey Street from December 20 to 22.
Founder Jenny Muhlwa, of Fulwood, said it was the group’s biggest-ever venture, like a ballet with acts, but using belly dance.
“There is no audition process. This is an opportunity for women who have always dreamed of dancing on stage to take to the limelight.
“Even if women don’t want to take part performing there will be plenty of opportunities to get involved in other ways, or simply to have a shimmy in class!”
Jenny added: “Belly dancing has become more popular in Sheffield and there are several bellydance groups and school children who will be working together in this community performance.
“Performing to an audience is a powerful way of inspiring confidence and increasing self-esteem.
“Many women in my classes have overcome personal tragedies and have cited belly dancing and particularly performing as a real help on their road to recovery.”
Belrobics holds classes in Meersbrook, Crookes, The Manor, Totley, Manor and Barlborough.
