New splash for old paddling pools
SHEFFIELD’S only remaining paddling pools are due to be given a new lease of life.
Plans have been drawn up to refurbish the pools in the park Rivelin Valley Road.
An exhibition, inviting local people to give their views, will go on display in the park café on Sunday and will remain until the end of February. Officers in the council’s parks and countryside section will be on hand between 11am and 3pm. Already consultation has been carried out with parents and families of disabled children.
Coun Leigh Bramall, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “I hope that local people will come along and give us their comments on the refurbishment so that we can provide the facilities that most people would prefer.”
It was hoped to transform the whole Rivelin Valley play area to the same high standard as others in the city.
“We have secured this funding to improve play facilities for disabled children, but the improvements will benefit all children using the pools. The funding is for the specific use at Rivelin Valley and without this funding the pools would have a very limited life expectancy.”
The four Rivelin paddling pools were constructed in the 1960s and were originally fed by filtered water from the adjacent river. A recirculation and chlorination system was added in the 1980s, and the process was given a limited upgrade in the mid 1990s.
They are the only municipal paddling pools in Sheffield since the closure of the Millhouses Park pools.
