PRIVATE rented housing makes up between 12 and 15 per cent of Sheffield’s homes – and the council is keen to work with landlords to make sure properties are safe and tenants are being dealt with properly.

Coun Harry Harpham, Sheffield Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “We are always willing to advise and work with landlords who may need help with managing their properties and our inspectors are there to provide advice.

Peter Turkington is a private landlord whose company, PC Properties, manages about 500 tenants, mostly students.

The firm is a founding member of the Sheffield Student Landlord Association.

Mr Turkington said: “There is inevitably a small minority of so-called landlords who refuse to comply with required standards. We are committed to helping to identify those who disregard obligations towards welfare, health and safety of tenants.”
