Organ recital raises £400

A RECITAL on a historic organ at the Beacon Methodist Church in Nether Green, featuring Music for Royal Occasions, raised more than £400 for an orphanage in Kenya, adding to £600 from a recital last July.

The latest performance was by David Oldfield, organist of All Saints, Woodham, near Woking, who comes from Sheffield and was one of many organists who were encouraged by the late King Edward VII School teacher Norman Barnes.

The organ at the former Hallam Methodist Church was built in 1863 by “Father” Henry Willis, who built the organs in the Royal Albert Hall, St Paul’s and Canterbury Cathedrals and the great organ in Windsor Castle that was destroyed in the fire of 1992.
