IT WAS a charity swimathon with a difference, by hounds of all hues...

Twenty-eight plucky pooches took to the water at pets’ hydrotherapy centre Aquavet on Oak Street, Heeley, Sheffield, for a sponsored swimathon in aid of the Support Dogs organisation.

Centre owner Lisa Dobson said she expected hundreds of pounds to be raised by the event, the first of its kind.

“The dogs swam for 15 minutes each, with four dogs an hour taking part,” she said. “All are patients or have been patients here. One dog raised £100, and another £350!

“People have been telling me people have been more keen to sponsor a dog than a person taking part in a charity event - I suppose it’s something a bit quirky. The dogs have been really enjoying themselves. We’ve had all sorts taking part - a King Charles Spaniel, a German Shepherd, a Labrador, Staffies.

“Many came to us as patients lame and miserable but after swimming sessions built up their muscles and are now doing well.”
