When mum Donna Todd went under the knife for her second life-saving brain surgery she had no idea what her friends were planning, writes Ellen Beardmore.
Ten pals from Dore in Sheffield were in fact deciding to strip off for charity as the 36-year-old underwent an eight-hour operation to clip potentially deadly brain aneurysms.
And when she came around from the surgery at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital last August they surprised her with the news - even roping her in to the challenge.
Now the group have sold hundreds of calendars to say thank you to hospital staff, smashing all their fundraising targets and collecting more than £3,500.
Mum-of-two Donna said: “A couple of days before the surgery I was talking about shaving my head, as I would have to anyway, even if it only raised £10, because I wanted to give something back.
“When I went under the knife the girls got together and said, ‘Why don’t we get naked?’.
“I had my head shaved and stitches everywhere when I next saw them but I said yes.
“A couple of weeks after the surgery we went to a friend’s house, took all our clothes off, and that was it!
“We didn’t expect it to get as big as it did because we are just normal people.”
Donna - who lived in Totley, but has just moved to Cumbria - decided to have the operation after doctors found three aneurysms.
Her first operation a year previously lasted 10 hours but she has now returned to a normal life.
She said: “It was my choice to have the operation.
“The doctors didn’t know if the aneurysms would go and that can end up in a stroke or death.
“I’ve got kids and I didn’t want to put myself at risk so I decided to go ahead and get them clipped.
“The team in the Hallamshire were just absolutely fantastic. All the nurses were amazing.”
The friends will present Neurocare - which funds lifesaving equipment for the Hallamshire’s neurosciences department - with a cheque next month.
Corin McCann, senior fundraiser, said: “Donna and all the ladies have done such a great job putting together this calendar which looks fantastic!
“We’re pleased that they’ve got behind Neurocare in support of Donna, and so grateful for the incredible amount they have raised.”
To avoid postage, the calendar can also be bought from various outlets in Dore, as well as the Neurocare Charity Office, for £5. If you wish to order one to collect, please call 0114 267 6464.
