SHEFFIELD paid its annual tribute to the ten American airmen who died when their aircraft crashed into Endcliffe Park during the Second World War.

A wreath was laid at a stone commemorating the crew of the Mi Amigo Flying Fortress which crashed in February, 1944, as it tried to limp home to its base in Northamptonshire.

Last Sunday’s ceremony, attended by VIPs, American Air Force personnel and the Sheffield branch of the RAF Association, was followed by a service at St Augustine’s Church in Brocco Bank. Event organiser the Rev Gordon Unsworth said: “It is also about the thousands of American airmen who died during the Second World War in the skies over Europe.”
