SOUTH Yorkshire Police’s Sports and Social Club is set to be refused permission to pitch a marquee on its playing fields during the spring and summer.
No objections have been made by the public to the proposals at the Niagara Ground, at Wadsley Bridge.
But Sheffield Council’s planning officers believe the loss of open space and sports pitch would be against the council’s policy to protect open spaces.
The club argues that the circket pitch, on which it wanted to site the marquee, is no longer used.
It says it needs to raise money from holding events in order to stay viable.
The marquee would operate during spring and summer months.
A licence has already been granted for the marquee and the council’s environmental health service has no objections to the plan.
However, council officials say there is an overriding need to stick to the authority’s planning policy.
A decision on the plans will be made at a meeting of Sheffield Council’s West and North Planning board on Tuesday.
