A former Sheffield Hallam University professor will be taking part in his first half marathon this weekend – to raise funds for charity Action for ME.

Tim Cooper, aged 57, has never run more than six miles before but is taking on the challenge because his sister is an ME sufferer.

Tim, who is running with his daughter Martha, 21, said: “I signed up for the Robin Hood Half Marathon in Nottingham after a particularly distressing phone call with my sister, whose health has deteriorated so much she is housebound and suffers flu-like symptoms month after month.

“Any physical exertion or excessive mental stimulus causes her symptoms to worsen, which means she can’t walk more than a few paces or watch television. “
