A QUARTET of Sheffield students have organised a city run to help build an emergency hostel for young homeless people.

Ryan Davies, Garreth Cox, Oliver Barrett and Thomas Bailey, students at Sheffield Hallam University, have put together the event for charity Roundabout with city centre nightclub Plug.

The 5km run takes place at Norfolk Park on Sunday January 27, from noon, and will help boost the cause’s fundraising appeal.

All money raised by runners will help refurbish the hostel in Highfield – the only one of its kind in the region – for young people aged 16 to 24.

Ryan said: “Giving back to the community we live in is something that we not only enjoy, but believe is important.

“Roundabout works with people of similar age to ourselves.

“We are excited for the run and hoping we can make a difference to Roundabout and its renovation of their emergency hostel.

“We would like to thank Centre in the Park at Sheffield Council for providing a great venue free of charge to help make the event a success. “

The hostel is to undergo a £1 million transformation to make it more suitable for vulnerable young people with 19 new bedrooms, kitchens, lounges and training rooms.

Youngsters staying there will be able to learn new life skills, so they can live independently and break the cycle of homelessness.

However, Roundabout needs to plug a £300,000 funding gap with fundraising.

Trustee Scott Bailey, who runs Plug and is supporting the event, said: “We are pleased Plug can support the event which has been so professionally organised by Ryan, Garreth, Thomas and Oliver.

“I am very proud to be a trustee at Roundabout and help to raise funds to support young homeless people in Sheffield.”

n The run costs £5 to enter. For more information, and to register, visit Roundabout Homeless or go along on the day itself and pay £6 to run.
