IT’S a racing certainty - England will beat France in their Euro 2012 opener on Monday,

And who says so?

Sheffield’s own psychic pooch, Ronnie the retired greyhound, that’s who.

Racing Ronnie - the Steel City’s answer to Paul the Octopus who correctly predicted eight out of eight matches at the 2010 FIFA World Cup - made his prophecies at Owlerton Greyhound Stadium this week.

Ronnie’s predictions were made by dog biscuits placed on the flags of each country taking part in the tournament.

He was given the freedom to choose whichever pile he wanted. And his appetite took him first to England.

But it wasn’t all good news for Three Lions fans.

Racing Ronnie has predicted that England’s big rivals – Germany - will win this year’s Championships.

John Gilburn, MD of Owlerton Greyhound Stadium said: “Ronnie’s powers of prediction have been rumoured across the racing world for some time.

“So we thought we’d put it to the test with England’s next major tournament approaching. We’ll wait to see if his predictions are true!”

Ronnie’s mystical powers have long since been whispered about around the stadium, with staff recalling his habit of sniffing one dog before races.

And the sniffing victim would then go on to win.

Since ending his days running around the track, Ronnie now lives with his owner and helps out the team at the Retired Greyhound Trust.

■ Owlerton Stadium will be showing the Euro 2012 games live on race nights – Tuesday, Friday and Saturdays - so football fans won’t have to miss out on greyhound racing.
