ANOTHER national restaurant chain is preparing to move on to Ecclesall Road.
Nando’s, which specialises in Portuguese-style chicken, is set to start fitting out premises in the same new block as Pizza Express, near the Berkeley Centre, early next month.
It marks the culmination of a deal that has been bubbling for more than a year and underlines the continuing popularity of Ecclesall Road as a place to eat and drink, despite reservations in some quarters that it is at the expense of traditional shops.
“The fact that national names such as Nando’s and Pizza Express are coming to Ecclesall Road can be taken as a positive,” said Matthew Barnsdale, consultant with Lambert Smith Hampton.
“They are investing a lot of money in the fit-outs and the staff.”
It will be the second’s Nando’s in Sheffield, in addition to West Street, and will cover roughly the same area as the Pizza Express, with a retail unit, so far unlet, in between.
Mr Barnsdale said negotiations were advanced for another restaurant in the former Pizza Hut premises at the entrance to the Berkeley Centre.
Meanwhile, the Bauhaus furniture store, next to Yankee’s restaurant, in Ecclesall Road is due to be turned into a licensed coffee shop called Couch.
An application for advertising consent has been submitted by a Birmingahm-based company.
Despite the popularity of the road for restaurants, cafes and bars, not all last the course. Dunns River Cafe and Mish Mash have closed recently.
