The Motorpoint Arena reopens on Sunday after a two-month refurbishment, ready to facing up to competition from Leeds. The first event is an ice hockey match between the Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers.
Managers of the 22-year-old Attercliffe arena believe its long-term future is secure.
Marketing manager Simon Bailey said: “There is always a honeymoon period attached to the opening of a new venue as event promoters and audiences try out what is new in the market. Our arena has had been through this process before as arenas have opened in Manchester, Newcastle, Liverpool and Nottingham.”
The refurbishment includes a new roof, seats, toilets, ice rink plexi-glass and food and drink outlets. Capacity is 13,600 – 100 more than the Leeds Arena, which was officially opened last night by Elton John.
