Rock star's classic hits

Jerry Moffatt is 46 years old and for many years was the greatest rock climber in the world.

Having stepped down from a career of top-level climbing several years ago, Jerry recently published his autobiography, Revelations, which charts his story from schoolboy obsession to his ascent to worldwide rock star.

He travelled the world as a climber but his home has been Sheffield for the last 30 years, where he co-owns The Foundry Climbing Centre and where he still lives with his wife and two young children.

Revelations is published by Sheffield publisher Vertebrate Publishing and is available from all good bookshops.

Hallamshire Golf Club

I've been a member here for 10 years. More than 25 years ago, when I first moved to Sheffield, I used to go running from Broomhill, across the golf course and then go climbing on the rocks at Bell Hagg. I didn't play golf then and I never imagined that years later I'd play the game.

There's actually a little crag next to the 17th green that could have a climb on it; a little arte. The Hallamshire is a fantastic course with great greens – I love it up there. If you carry along that road past Redmires, you eventually get to Stanage Edge – another place close to my heart.

The Old Crown Inn Scotland Street

I've been to some pretty good evening dos and private parties at The Old Crown. When I took it over five years ago it was almost derelict with an ugly car park next door, so it's great to see it doing well as that whole area of the city has changed dramatically over the last few years.

It's free for hire for evening parties – just give us a call!

Lower Bradfield

In the summer time it's great to sit by the cricket pitch, watch the match and see a few wickets tumble. You can buy a pint from the pavilion and the kids love it there. There's a nice little playground, an ice cream van and you can feed the ducks next to the river.

Ecclesall Road

I know I'm really knocking on a bit when I find myself drinking in a lot of the trendy bars at the Hunters Bar end of Ecclesall Road! I don't tend to go out for meals but having a drink in Nonna's is always a good way to start the evening.

Burbage South

The gritstone crag of Burbage South is just off the main road from Sheffield to Hathersage, near the Fox House Inn. There's bouldering near the green drive path through the centre of the valley but my favourite climbing is on the edge itself.

There are fantastic views and the climbing stays in the shade for much of the day, which is great for climbing conditions. It's just brilliant that the Burbage Valley is so close to Sheffield.

The Foundry climbing centre

I've a lot of happy memories of training and climbing down at The Foundry in Mowbray Street. What's particularly good is that you can go down there and there's always someone to climb with – the social side of the wall is as good as the climbing, which I think is really important.

The Forum

I've been going to The Forum in Devonshire Street for years. It's a classic Sheffield bar that's changed a lot over the years but it's always a sound bet for lunch.

You see a lot of bars come and go but I'd like to think The Forum will be here for many more years yet.

Froggatt and Curbar Edges

I've been climbing on the edges of Froggatt and Curbar for many years. I first went there on a school trip in 1979 and it was my first time climbing on gritstone. It was raining and I had a tough time on an easy route but I still clearly remember that day – the beginning of a love affair with the Peak.

A good tip is that both crags are good climbing venues when the weather is cold but the sun is out.

Weston Park Museum

They've done a fantastic job doing up the old building and providing a great free facility for the public. I really enjoyed the Charlie and Lola exhibition – and the kids did, too!
