The Millers were trailing 1-0 with 10 minutes to go when they broke quickly through Emmanuel Ledesma and Jordan Bowery,

Matt Derbyshire still had plenty to do, but controlled the ball to the left of the penalty area and then curled in a beauty from 20 yards.

Then a minute from time Jordan Bowery escaped down the right before firing a fierce low effort past Mainz keeper Robin Zentner.

Rotherham had had to work hard against the German top-flight outfit in the second half, keeping their shape and discipline until centre-half Leon Balogun volleyed the visitors in front in the 72nd minute.

The Millers' two late goals were the reward for a tenacious, grafting performance.

This was a tough workout a week ahead of the club's Championship opener against MK Dons and they will have benefited hugely from it.

Danny Collins was a standout performer at centre-half and Aidy White again caught the eye with his pacy runs from left midfield.

New boy Chris Maguire played for more than an hour, showing moments of quality and endearing himself to the home fans with the effort he put in.

The first half ended goalless, but the Millers shaded proceedings against an organised outfit.

Maguire had a shot on goal in the first minute and 17 minutes later tried his luck with a thumping half-volley that goalkeeper Loris Karius pushed out only for Matt Derbyshire to put his overhead kick over the bar.

It was a low-key opening 45 minutes - unlike the 10 minutes at the end.
