PHEW! It may be hot weather but these plants are perfect for the conditions...

You can cope with sunny Sheffield with barely a watering required when your natural home is the scorching Sahara Desert.

Crowds enjoying the recent hot weather in the Botanical Gardens took a break from the sun for an indoor exhibition of cacti plants.

Among the hundreds on show were short ones, tall ones and flowering varieties.

The event was organised by the British Cactus and Succulent Society Sheffield Branch.

Peter Cowdell, society spokesman, said: “We had a wonderful show, with a record attendance, superb weather, a good mixture of young and old visitors and super plants on display.

“It was the best show we have had for many a year.”

The event was the 57th time the annual show took place.

It was open all day both Saturday and Sunday last weekend.

Visitors queued to get into the show, where members of the society displayed their individual collections of plants.
