CELEBRATIONS were in order for a devoted Sheffield couple as they marked 65 years of happy marriage.

Raymond Shaw, aged 84, and June Shaw, 83, of Goodison Crescent, Malin Bridge, tied the knot in 1951 at Stannington Church - and say the secret to their long marriage is never spending time apart.

The diamond wedding pair are still active, enjoying regular meals out during the week and getting out and about in their Rover car, which keen painter and gardener Raymond still drives himself.

The couple are both from Hillsborough and met at a Christmas party in 1946.

“The party was hosted by friends and I suppose we just got chatting,” said June, who worked as a book-keeper and typist at toolmakers WH Clay Ltd on Rockingham Street in Sheffield city centre.

Ray served in the Army with the Royal Engineers, spending three years on duty in Palestine.

After leaving the forces he worked for Stones Brewery as a maintenance engineer, then took a job at the Safety In Mines Research Establishment on Broad Lane in Sheffield, where he stayed for 36 years.

“He was the workshop manager,” June said. “They would test all the mine workings for safety, like pit props and things like that.”

June also later worked as a dinner lady at Myers Grove School.

The couple have a son, Steven, 53, who is married to Helen, 43, and has just opened a cosmetic dentistry business in Bakewell.

Raymond and June have two granddaughters, Sophie, 20, and Tamsin, 17, and a great-granddaughter, Maya, three.

Raymond’s older sister, Mary, 89, who was chief bridesmaid at her brother’s wedding, still lives nearby.

“Our diamond wedding is just something we’ve arrived at!” June said. “We do everything together and share everything. We have complete trust in each other.”

The couple celebrated their anniversary with a family meal at Fellacini’s Italian restaurant in Bakewell.
