Save The Children is encouraging people to take part in the event by wearing festive sweaters and donating to help vulnerable youngsters.

The suggested donations are £2 for adults and £1 for school children who take part. Donations of £2 can be made via text message, by texting JUMPER to 70050.

Schools. businesses, organisations and individuals put on their Christmas Jumpers to have fun and take part in the fundraising today.

William Hague’s daredevil 86-year-old father. Nigel, aged 86, of Harley, near Rotherham, promoted the appeal and raised money when he wore his Christmas Jumper during a charity wing-walk, on a Boeing Stearman PT17 Kaydet.

As soon as the politician’s father touched down, David Powell, 79, took on a skydive for the appeal also at Sibson Airfield, Peterborough.

Mr Hague senior said: “Skydiving and wing walking is something everybody should do before they kick the bucket, it puts a spark in your life.

“My friends and family think I’m a bit of a nut but I really enjoy doing these things, and I was thrilled to be doing it for Save The Children.”

Samantha Cameron donned festive knitwear today as schoolchildren from across the country exchanged Christmas jumpers in 10 Downing Street.

The Prime Minister’s wife joined more than 40 youngsters as they swapped the winter woollies they had designed for Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day.
