PREPARATIONS are under way for one of the highlights of Sheffield’s horticultural calendar.

The city’s branch of the British Cactus and Succulent Society is hosting its annual show at Sheffield Botanical Gardens this month.

Now in its 57th year, the show is shaping up to be the best yet. Sheffield-born Brian Fearn, known as the Alan Titchmarsh of the cactus world, will be guest of honour at the event.

Mr Fearn, of Matlock, is owner of the oldest cactus nursery in the UK and will be present to judge society members’ entries for the competition categories.

Organisers have stepped up show promotion this year in a bid to draw a record attendance from fellow green-fingered cactus enthusiasts and the general public.

There will be a tombola, plant sale and an advisory service for anyone struggling to take care of their own.

The show is open from noon until 5pm on Saturday, May 26, and from 10am until 4pm on Sunday, May 27.
