They were married at Norton Church on April 26, 1943.

Ray, aged 94, was born and bred in Crooks while Brenda, aged 92, grew up in Abbeydale.

Today the couple, who live in Greenhill, will be joined by their two daughters, Lynn and Joy, their four grandchildren, two step grandchildren and their three great grandchildren for a party – before heading down to Westminster Abbey in June for the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation.

Ray was at Laycock Engineering in Sheffield for 51 years before he retired from the role of executive quality manager – but his work was far from over as he joined the neighbourhood watch, where he was chair until he was 90.

Brenda stayed at home to raise Lynn and Joy and now goes to weekly swimming and yoga classes, and was treated to a night at the casino by her friends for her 90th birthday.

Their granddaughter, Diane, said: “Reaching 70 years of marriage is a fantastic achievement and we’re all looking forward to spending the weekend as a family.”

The couple say love and working together is the secret to a happy marriage.
