A NEWLY-WED teenager was caught drink-driving after hearing ‘bombshell’ news his wife was having an affair, a court heard.

James Gaskin, of Doncaster Road, Mexborough, was arrested just eight days after his wedding when he hit a parked car in Creswell, north Derbyshire.

Police on patrol at 3.55am saw a Ford Transit van reverse out of a side road and strike the parked vehicle.

The car sped on to Duchess Street and officers activated their blue lights but Gaskin, aged 19, failed to stop, eventually crashing into bushes.

Andrea Charity, prosecuting at Chesterfield Magistrates Court, said when arrested Gaskin gave a reading of 81mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath - more than double the legal limit.

Phil Bloore, mitigating, said: “His wife dropped a bombshell and confessed she was having an affair with another man. This reduced him to an emotional wreck and he felt if he didn’t leave the house he would assault her.”

Gaskin admitted drink-driving and was ordered to carry out 120 hours unpaid work and pay £85 costs.

He was also handed a 20-month driving ban.
