A NUTRITIONIST has really put her skills to the test - by surviving on a food budget of just £1 a day for charity.

Hannah Bailey, from Walkley in Sheffield, is part of a group of young businesspeople taking on the week-long challenge to raise money for Save the Children.

The single rule is they can spend only £7 on food and drink for a week.

Hannah, aged 24, said: “The idea is not only to raise money but also to experience what it is like to live in poverty.

“Whatever money we would normally spend on shopping we are donating.”

No coffee, alcohol, meals out or on the go have been the major sacrifices for Hannah.

And she has become pretty ‘bored’ of porridge made with water for breakfast, carrot and pearl barley soup for lunch, and vegetable bolognaise or chilli for dinner.

Reduced eggs, tinned tomatoes and baked beans are also featuring heavily in the homemade meals. She added: “If I’ve had meetings I’ve not been able to have coffee but had to order tap water.

“You realise how organised you have to be because you can’t just pick up something on your way because there isn’t the money to do it.

“I am bored of it, you don’t realise how much variety you have in your diet. It has really opened my eyes to how tough it can be.”

All those taking part in the challenge, which ends on Monday, are members of Junior Chamber International, a network for young professionals.
