Rt Hon David Blunkett MP presents Food Safety in Catering and HYPER Certificates to volunteers at Firth Park Foodbank

Volunteers at a Sheffield foodbank have been honoured for their work helping families to eat healthily.

Supporters of Firth Park Foodbank were presented with food safety in catering and Hyper – Helping Yorkshire People Eat Responsibly – certificates by former Home Secretary David Blunkett.

The event was a celebration of the Royal Assembly Church-managed foodbank’s work, as well as the successful training of its volunteers.

Mr Blunkett, Labour MP for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough, said: “I’m proud so many people, including youngsters, are prepared to give their time on a regular basis in order that others might have something decent to eat.

“It is particularly important at this time of year when people are enjoying themselves, when there are obvious outgoings from those who can afford it and even more hurt and despair from those without.

“That is why it is important people are willing to give their time, as well as food and cash, to help the variety of food banks now operating in the city – I have six in my constituency alone.”

The training was funded by Food Aware, a ‘community interest company’ which supports more than 1,500 people across deprived South Yorkshire communities.

Sean Gibbons, Food Aware managing director, said: ““I would like to thank Mr Blunkett for visiting the foodbank and presenting certificates to our team of hard-working volunteers.

“Our Hyper project has made a huge impact across a number of communities.

“It is a pleasure to assist volunteers and help provide the tools to run Firth Park Foodbank effectively – a fantastic achievement by all involved.”
