More than £900 has been donated to a city food bank by Sheffield Muslim Community Forum.

Members of the forum have handed over the money, along with food donations, to S2 Foodbank after taking collections at Abbeydale Super Store on Abbeydale Road and Bangla Bazaar on Staniforth Road on Sunday, December 21.

The donation will be used by food bank volunteers, who are based at St Swithun’s Church Centre on Cary Road, Manor.

Sohail Mumtaz, project leader for SMCF, said: “We are part of the community and we should all play a part in helping each other and building a cohesive community.

“We will meet after the new year and try to do something more regular on behalf of the Muslim community for the food banks.”

The S2 food bank opened earlier this year to help cope with the increasing demand for support.

Its work is designed to take some of the pressure off the Salvation Army on Duke Street, which has previously been taking responsibility for food bank support in the S2 area.

The food bank has around 20 volunteers supporting its work.
