Tennis coach David Marray met his match when a special visitor called into Hallamshire Tennis and Squash club this week.

Nine time Wimbledon singles champion Martina Navratilova was in the area as part of a promotional tour in her role as a BT Sport pundit. She visited a BT call centre in Doncaster before travelling across South Yorkshire to play Marray at the Ecclesall-based club.

Marray, older brother of Wimbledon doubles champion Jonny, said: “It came completely out of the blue.

“I was called by Ross Hutchins (a leading British player) who said Martina was looking to have a hit somewhere and would she be able to come over. It was good fun to play her and she’s still a very good player.”

Navratilova, aged 57, won an unprecedented 59 Grand Slam titles as well as 167 singles and 177 doubles championships in a glittering career.

She said: “I’ve been to Yorkshire and places across England, and I know London pretty well, but I’ve never been up this way. It’s nice to see the countryside, it’s beautiful.”
