Olympic gold medal winner Robin Cousins has given his seal of approval to two talented skaters from Sheffield.

Cousins, a former competitive figure skater who was crowned Olympic champion in 1980 and was a European champion, three-time World medallist and four-time British national champion, praised ice dancers Alice Gavin and Dominic Barter after watching them compete at iceSheffield in Attercliffe.

The talented skaters took part in the first competition of the 2015/2016 season last week - a qualifier for the British Championships attended by over 200 competitors.

Alice, aged 12 and a pupil at Tapton School and 14-year-old Dom, 14, who attends Stocksbridge High, trained at 5.30am most days of the summer holidays to perfect their new routines.

They won each of their three events giving them overall Basic Novice Gold, with scores which improved their personal best by 15.15 points from 32.76 to 47.91.

Cousins, High Performance Manager for the National Ice Skating Association, said: “I am excited by the potential Alice and Dominic show and look forward to seeing their talent progress in the years ahead.”

Mark Hanretty, known for his work as a professional skater on ITV’s Dancing on Ice show, is one of Dom and Alice’s coaches.

He said: “I am delighted that the hard work of Alice and Dominic has been rewarded by the British judges just over one year after this talented pair teamed up.

“This fantastic result sets them up well for an exciting season ahead and we look forward to building on this success as we head towards their international competitions later in the year.”

Alice said: “We have worked really hard and were so pleased that we skated well on the day. I am very happy that we have achieved such good scores.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to all the people who have helped us.”
